In our last post, we talked about brewing a batch of beer with our friends at Warped Wing Brewing Company using the Kveik/Saison hybrid yeast strain, Jotunn. Well, it’s finally on tap and I could not be happier with this beer.
It pours a slightly hazy, deep amber. Not quite brown but just short of it. The pictures above were taken a few minutes after it was poured. It came out with a thick, off-white creamy head that had wonderful retention.
The nose is bright, ripe citrus – orange and tangerine from both the yeast and orange peel we added along with hints of tropical fruit, likely from the hops. There was also hints of caramel/vanilla. In the last beer I brewed with Jotunn, I also got notes of Vanilla so definitely a characteristic of this interesting hybrid.
It tastes as good is it smells. Starts with some clean, grainy notes from pilsner that leads right into that wonderful citrus character. Again, the orange and tangerine stand out here. Possible some tropical fruit notes but not as much as in the aroma. Some caramel/vanilla in the mid pallet and it finishes with a hint of peppery spice leaving you wanting another sip.
We only brewed 3 bbls of it on their pilot system so get it now before it is all gone (aka before I drink it all).
